Scandal, the new drama starring Kerry Washington, Columbus Short and Tony Goldwyn, closed out with a record breaking season finale Thursday.

According to ratings released Friday, the season finale drew 7.2 million viewers following a similar high rated season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

Up at least 17% in total viewers from last week’s episode, Scandal reached new heights with the coveted 18-49 demo as well (up 20%).

During the season finale Olivia Pope (Washington) and her team of fixers wiped a crime scene clean to save Quinn while Billy Chambers covered up the murder of Gideon and shook the White House with shocking allegations. In the end, viewers were left with a major cliffhanger that involved Quinn and her true identity.

Scandal is one of ABC’s best performing freshman series, along with Revenge, this year. It was picked up for a second season earlier this week and will return during the same time slot, Thursday nights at 10pm, in the Fall.
