We are thrilled to have a good look and listen to Ian as Russ in this MacGyver promo video, and to learn more about who he is and how he comes to know the former Phoenix Foundation operative. Seems to have a very interesting background. Thanks to TV Insider for the clip.
‘MacGyver’ First Look: Why Is Henry Ian Cusick Stalking MacGyver? (VIDEO)
If you’re like us, you’ve missed seeing the intrepid and skilled Phoenix Foundation gang of MacGyver
saving the world on Friday nights. Luckily, we have some good news —
Season 4 of the action drama returns February 7 in its regular 8/7c
timeslot on CBS. (Magnum P.I.is taking a break while Hawaii Five-0moves back to its longtime 9/8c timeslot.)
There are a few new changes at the start of the fourth season — 18
months have passed since the finale aired in May, and the Phoenix
Foundation has since been defunded. So when we pick up, we’ll see our
team, including hunky hero Angus MacGyver (Lucas Till), in new, non-government jobs.
Also, there are some new cast additions to make the team sharper than
ever. First, Levy Tran, who plays Desi Nguyen, a fellow operative who
has more than a little sexual chemistry with Mac, is a full-timer on the
show now. Second, Henry Ian Cusick
joins the cast as Russ Taylor, a wealthy ex-MI6 agent with a shady
business background who takes an interest in MacGyver, who’s now
teaching a class of bored college students.
In the opening moments of the season premiere, Mac is aware that
someone is following him and, well, he’s right. And that someone is
Taylor, who has a specific agenda which includes wanting to get him back
in the saving-the-world game. Or is he just a stalker? Courtesy of CBS,
we’ve got the first look clip of MacGyver crossing paths with Taylor on
the college campus where Mac is teaching. Take a look in the clip
above.
“Mac is back,” and with the expected action-packed bang, in the first promo for the return of CBS’ MacGyver.
Picking up 18 months after the Phoenix Foundation was disbanded and the team members were stripped of their high-level clearances, Season 4 — premiering Friday, Feb. 7 at 8/7c, nudging Hawaii Five-0 back to its 9 pm time slot — finds MacGyver (played by Lucas Till), Riley (Tristin Mays), Desi (Levy Tran), and Bozer (Justin Hires) have all turned in their “secret agent badges” for run-of-the-mill day jobs. That ordinary existence screeches to a halt, however, when Russ Taylor (Lost‘s Henry Ian Cusick), an eccentric billionaire with a shady past, comes to them for help stopping an imminent attack.
Reading in Matty (Meredith Eaton) and together realizing they must get back in the game without the resources of Phoenix, the reassembled team is put on the trail of a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy that is determined to save humanity from itself.
As noted above, Cusick has joined the Season 4 cast in the series regular role of Russ, a handsome and quick-witted ex-military man and master manipulator who is skilled in propaganda and lie detection, and boasts an extremely high emotional intelligence. He is also very wealthy, and thus is used to both getting his way and enjoying the spoils of war — including expensive suits, fast cars, private jets and a house in Monte Carlo.
MacGyverseason 4 is premiering on CBS come Friday, February 7, and it’s clear that there is a lot of cool stuff to expect!
Take, for example, a new premise for the story. According to a new report from TVLine, the new season will pick up a good 18 months after the disbandment of the Phoenix Foundation. When that happened, many of your Team Phoenix members lost their clearances and had to find a way to move forward with their lives. How does that impact their lives? They’re all going to have to get normal jobs, for starters! The first promo hints that Mac is going to now be a teacher, and we imagine that there’s some other fun that will be sprinkled in here and there.
So what could get the gang back together? It seems as though much of it will have to do with newcomer Russ (played by Henry Ian Cusick), an extremely-wealthy man who is looking for their help to solve a problem. While his long-term role in the story remains unclear, we can say one thing with certainty — this is not meant to be a recreation of Jack. This is a very different man with a unique personality and intention.
The rest of the core cast from the end of season 3 is set to return, including Lucas Till, Tristin Mays, Levy Tran, Justin Hires, and Meredith Eaton. Season 4 is going to revolve around learning more of who these people are, while also showing off some more exciting adventures. We’ve waiting a long time to check out these episodes, so here’s to hoping that it lives up the expectations that we have in our head at the moment.
Remember that if you love MacGyver, the best thing to do is watch the show live! Even though the series is premiering at midseason, we don’t think that this is some sort of death sentence for the long-term future of the show. We’re hoping for many seasons still on CBS.
Ian co-starred in this intriguing indie feature film in 2006, alongside Gabrielle Anwar and David Ortiz. Our forever thanks to Bob Degus for making it! And to Brian Ralston, for the wonderful score!!
